This year, the lab will take place from 27 May - 5 June 2016.

DEADLINE TO APPLY: 20 FEBRUARY 2016

There is no application fee.

The cost of participation is $250 CAD. This provides entry to all workshops, masterclasses and concerts, and lunches.

All applications must be sent digitally. Please upload files to our Apply Now page. No hard copies will be accepted. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]

Please read the details corresponding to the workshop of your choice.

ALL APPLICANTS

Please submit:

  1. Your curriculum vitae
  2. A written statement of intent (maximum one page) briefly explaining your artistic practice and interest in the lab.

PERFORMERS

Please submit:

  1. Two recent recordings with a total duration of 10-20 minutes
    • At least one of the works should be written in the last 50 years.
    • Recordings can be of solo or chamber music projects

While recordings demonstrating performance of contemporary music are preferable, we are still willing to accept applicants interested in the workshop without a recording of a recent work. If this is your first contemporary music experience, please let us know in your letter of intent what has inspired you to apply.

We also welcome applications from pre-formed ensembles. Please apply in the same way as individual performers. Keep in mind that you’d participate in the lab as individuals in addition to your role as ensembles.

COMPOSERS

Please submit:

  1. Two scores of recently composed works
    • One of the scores should be for a maximum of three performers. Works demonstrating solo writing are encouraged.
  2. Recordings of the works submitted.

    • The project can be already in progress or created completely during the Lab.
  3. A detailed list of technical needs
    • Please consult our technical rider for a complete list of our resources and information about our studio and exhibition spaces. It is the responsibility of the candidate to provide necessary materials for the creation or presentation of the project not provided by the Lab.

Sound Artist proposals can be individual projects or collaborative in nature. If you are interested in working with other lab participants (composers or performers) please specify in what way (for example: to record a clarinettist for an acousmatic work, or to work with a composer on a new media project).

Please submit:

  1. Two recent recordings of improvisations (solo or chamber), or of composed works, for a total duration of 10-20 minutes of music.
  2. For improvisers wishing to propose a project - please include a list of required materials in your letter of intention

While applications with recordings of improvisations are preferred, we will accept candidates with little or no experience with improvisation. If this is your first experience with improvised music, please let us know in your letter of intention what has inspired you to apply.

Please take note of the following dates:

20 FEBRUARY 2016. Deadline to apply.
5 MARCH 2016. Letters of acceptance sent to candidates
19 MARCH 2016. Pairings between composers and performers announced

SELECTION PROCESS

While we would like to accept as many applicants as possible, we can accommodate a maximum of forty participants and must maintain a balance between different workshops within the Lab.

The Montreal Contemporary Music Lab is aimed at emerging artists, and applications will be assessed primarily based on the perceived benefit to the participant. As a result, the written statement of intent is the most important element of the application. For sound artists, the perceived feasibility of the proposed project will be a crucial part of the assessment.

The selection committee includes members of MCML’s organisational team and invited guest artists.

VOLUNTEER

We are also looking for volunteers to assist during the lab. If interested, please contact [email protected].
